Juliana secondary school

Education offer

Juliana 1137

Juliana is a homework-free school and offers the following in the mavo program.

Juliana 1107

Class 1 junior general secondary education

Starting at Portus Juliana after eight years at your familiar primary school can be quite exciting, but at the same time, it’s also a lot of fun. A whole new world will open up for you, where you’ll soon feel at home. The first week is all about getting to know each other, making new friends, and participating in all kinds of activities together with your new class and mentor. During the introduction week, you’ll also receive all the information and materials you need to make it a fantastic year.

It’s also an adjustment for your parents, which is why your mentor will visit your home to meet them and get acquainted. Together, we’ll go through the most important information about the first year at Portus Juliana, and they can ask any questions if something isn’t completely clear. We believe it’s very important to work together with you and your parents to help you get the best out of yourself.

At our school, you’ll see your mentor very often. He or she will help you with homework and mentor lessons, as well as teach the subject that your mentor specializes in. All other lessons are taught by subject teachers.

Bridge year subjects

In the first year of secondary school, students have lessons in the following subjects:

  • Dutch
  • French
  • English
  • Human & Society
  • Mathematics
  • Biology
  • Technology
  • Music
  • Art
  • Sports & Physical Education
  • Religious Education
  • Civics

The school year is divided into four periods. After each block, there is a test week, for which we prepare together in advance. We alternate the test days with an activity day and an excursion, because that way you also learn fun, interesting, and new things.

In the last period, we go on camp together and have the sports orientation day. The first year ends with a fun end-of-year outing. As you can see, you won’t be bored with us and the first year will be over before you know it. We can’t wait to meet you!

Class 2 junior general secondary education

The students have left year 1 behind, and the excitement of a new school and a new class is a thing of the past. So, welcome to year 2! Still, there are new things this year as well. The students will be introduced to an additional language: German.

In year 1, all students took the same subjects. For year 2, everyone has chosen three subjects: history, geography, French, or science (physics and chemistry).

This means they no longer all take the same subjects, and so they are not always in class together. But one of the most important features of this school year is that the students in year 2 will start preparing for their subject choices for year 3.

To prepare the students as well as possible for this choice, various activities are organized throughout the school year.

One of these activities is the "bliksemstage" (lightning internship). During the bliksemstage, which lasts a morning, students get to see what it is like to work at a company. Students work with Qompas, a method in which they engage in career orientation. What does a profession involve? What skills do you need? Which further education should you choose? What am I good at? These are examples of topics that are covered. With the help of Qompas, all second-year students prepare for their subject choices for the upper years.

At the end of the school year, we visit the House of Representatives as part of citizenship education.

3rd year of pre-vocational secondary education (mavo)

In year 3, students prepare for the exam year. The results of the final test week already count towards the diploma in year 4.

An exception is social studies. This subject is taught and completed in the first two periods. The final grade counts towards the diploma. In periods 3 and 4, students can choose social science as an elective subject.

The elective subjects from year 2 are offered in clusters in year 3. Students take these subjects together with students from other classes; the other lessons are taken with their own class.

    Choosing a subject package

Career orientation is also an important part of year 3. At the end of the school year, students choose their final subject package for the exam year. They take personality type tests, visit a career fair, and do a one-week internship to get acquainted with a profession.

Of course, there is also room for excursions and other activities. In addition, we pay attention to social-emotional development. Year 3 is an important period in which students further develop towards adulthood.

4th year of pre-vocational secondary education (VMBO)

In year 4, three goals are central: obtaining the diploma, choosing a further education program, and increasing independence.

With great effort and positive energy, we prepare students for their exams. At the same time, we guide them in choosing a further education program. Together, we look at questions such as: who am I, what can I do, what do I want, and which course or profession suits me?

Students also learn to take more and more responsibility for their own work and behavior. This is an important preparation for MBO, where they will experience less structure and guidance.

In this way, we guide students in their development towards young adulthood and help them make important choices for their future with confidence.
